My story about cakes

This is a story about how I started making 3D cakes and why I love making them. They are so much fun to make, but they take a lot of time and patience too. It can also be frustrating, aggravating, and stressful when things don’t work the way I had hoped. I have 3 kids ages 10, 8, and 4 who I make the cakes for. When my oldest daughter was younger I would always make her cakes and decorate them to match the theme of the party. Nothing fancy, just the normal 9”x13” cake with frosting and a few of the sugar candies for decoration.
After I had my second child and a few cakes later, I wanted to get a little more creative with the designs of the cakes. I basically needed a challenge. The kids were getting older and could play the party games and really started to enjoy their birthdays. I started looking up party ideas on the internet when it came time to plan a party. I got tons of ideas for games, themes, and even the cakes. That is when my creativity kicked in and I wanted to try something new.

The first 3D cake I made
I remember the first time I decided to make a 3D cake. My second child was turning two at the time and she loved Barbie’s. What better idea for a cake than a Barbie cake, I thought to myself. I saw a Barbie cake kit at the store and I had to try to make it. The dress of the Barbie is the actual cake. It comes with the top half of the Barbie that you stick in the top of the cake for her body. Then you decorate the dress to your liking. After I made the Barbie cake and saw how much she loved the cake, I was hooked. I have only made 3 cakes with a kit or formed pan. The rest of them were free hand and cut to the shape I wanted. I can do more and be more creative with a regular sized cake. I look forward to the each birthday so I can see what kind of cake I can create.
The flaw on Mater

Since then we made a birthday tradition, the kids get to pick the theme of their birthday and I get to pick out the type of cake. Everything I put on the cake is edible, there are no plastic pieces. I am a perfectionist when it comes to making the cakes, hints the frustration part when it doesn’t work the way I want it to. I don’t like seeing my mistakes on the cake when it is completed. With every cake I make, I learn a new tip or an easier way of making it. I haven't taken any cake decorating classes, but I am hoping to one day. I use the trial and error method when making the cakes. I always make a test cake before the final cake, this way I get a better idea of what I am doing and how I want it to look before presenting it at the party.
Almost 7 years and 1 more kid later, I am making 3 cakes a year. I have made a Crocodile, Island Princess Barbie, Cowgirl Boot, 2 different types of Guitars, Mater from the “Cars” movie, a Treasure Chest, Fire Truck, Monster Truck, Thomas the train, a Castle, Monster High, and a Hello Kitty cake.
The first cake I made for someone else
I just recently made a shoe cake for the High School Cross Country team. This was the first time I had made a cake for anyone other than my kids. As the time has gone by and the more practice I have gotten, I am feeling more confident with the looks of the cakes. Until I can make a flawless cake I don’t feel I could make them for someone else besides my kids. I love seeing my kids’ face and those faces of the guests when they see the finished cake. As long as my kids are happy with their cakes, I will keep making them and enjoy every minute of it.

  1. Those cakes are amazing. Great job. I think the only thing I can make in 3D is an empty plate
